One Simple Question Changed Everything: Where Big Discoveries Really Begin

Why did the apple fall straight down instead of sideways? It sounds like a question a six-year-old might ask on a car ride, the kind you answer with “because gravity” and move on to the next snack request. But that question, or something close to it, is the one people say sat with Isaac Newton until it grew into a theory that explained the motion of planets, tides, and pretty much everything that falls. Whether the apple story is exactly true almost doesn’t matter. What matters is the habit behind it: staying with a question instead of rushing past it.

Where big discoveries actually start

Here’s what strikes me every time I read about a scientist’s early life: the discovery never starts with the answer. It starts with someone noticing something ordinary and refusing to let it go. Newton wasn’t handed a mystery labeled “gravity, please solve.” He watched something small and mundane and asked why. That’s the whole engine. Not genius arriving fully formed, but a kid who kept asking why long after the adults around him had stopped.

I think we sometimes picture discovery as a lightning bolt moment. In reality it looks more like patience. Newton spent years developing his ideas on motion and gravity, working through math that didn’t exist yet, because he needed it to describe what he was seeing. The question came first. The tools came later, built specifically to answer it.

Why this matters for the questions our kids ask

I don’t always answer my son’s questions well. Some days I’m distracted, or tired, or honestly don’t know the answer and just say “good question” and move on, hoping he forgets. I’m not proud of that. But I’ve started noticing which questions kids ask over and over, the ones they circle back to on their own. Those are worth slowing down for, even for five minutes, even if all I do is say, “I don’t know, let’s find out together.”

I don’t think the goal is raising a future physicist. Most kids who ask great questions grow up to do all sorts of ordinary, good things. The goal, if there is one, is keeping the asking alive instead of training it out of them by treating every question as an interruption.

A small habit that keeps curiosity fed

One thing that’s worked for us, without turning into a project or a chore, is keeping some reading time in the day, even just ten minutes, where my son can land on a story that raises its own questions. Biographies do this naturally. You read about someone noticing an apple fall, or a plant catching an insect, or a rock layer that doesn’t match its neighbors, and the question arrives on its own. Nobody has to assign curiosity. It just shows up if you give it a quiet page to land on.

I don’t think I’m doing this right every day. Some evenings the book stays closed and the tablet wins, and I tell myself tomorrow. But on the days it happens, I notice my son asking his own “why” instead of waiting for mine, and that feels like the actual point. Not smarter answers. Just a kid who’s still willing to wonder why the apple falls straight down.
