A Glitch in Time and Why Curious Kids Ask the Best Questions

Physicists announced something strange this month: a tiny inconsistency, a kind of glitch, in the way time itself behaves at the smallest scales. Nobody fully understands what it means yet. That is the part I keep coming back to. Grown, credentialed scientists looked at their instruments, found something that did not fit, and instead of hiding it, they published it and said, in effect, we don’t know, help us figure this out.
I think that is a wonderful thing for a kid to see. Not the equations, obviously. The posture. The willingness to say “that’s odd” out loud instead of pretending everything already makes sense.
Why a glitch is exciting, not scary
When my son hears about something breaking or not working right, his first instinct is to assume it’s bad news. A glitch in his video game means lost progress. A glitch in the wifi means no more show. So when I mentioned this time thing to him, I had to explain that in science, a glitch is often the best news you can get. It means there’s a door nobody has opened yet.
That’s such a different way of framing a mistake or an anomaly than what most of us grew up with. We were taught to get the right answer, fast, and move on. Scientists get paid, essentially, to sit with the wrong answer and ask why.
Newton and the habit of asking big questions
This is where Isaac Newton comes in for me, because centuries before anyone had instruments precise enough to notice a hiccup in time, he was already asking why things fall, why the moon doesn’t fall the same way, why light bends. Nobody handed him those questions. He noticed the ordinary and refused to let it stay ordinary.
What gets me about Newton’s story isn’t the genius part, which is hard for any kid to relate to. It’s that he started as an unremarkable student, more interested in machines and tinkering than in his lessons, and it was curiosity, not talent alone, that eventually opened up the universe to him. That part is very relatable. My son is not going to discover gravity. But he can absolutely ask why the sky is blue and not accept “because it just is” as a real answer.
What we actually do with this at home
I don’t have a curriculum for wonder. What works for us is smaller and less organized than that: when something odd comes up, in the news or in a book, we talk about it for a few minutes instead of explaining it away. I try not to rush to the answer, even when I sort of know it, because the pause is where the interesting questions live.
Reading plays into this more than I expected it to. Even ten minutes a day with a book that raises real questions, about science, history, people who wondered about things, seems to keep that muscle warm. It’s not a discipline thing for us. It’s closer to leaving a door open.
A gentle nudge toward wonder
We wrote about Newton’s odd, curious childhood in the book, Big Names for Little Hearts, along with other people who looked at something ordinary and asked why it was that way. None of them started out knowing they’d change how we see the world. They just kept asking.
I don’t know what will come of this glitch in time. Maybe nothing. Maybe everything. What I do know is that somewhere, a kid is going to hear about it and ask a follow-up question their parent can’t answer. I hope we let that sit for a minute before reaching for the phone.
