Four New Letters for DNA, and the Monk Who Cracked Heredity First

There was a science headline last week I had to read twice. Researchers have built DNA with eight genetic letters instead of the usual four. Every living thing, from a blade of grass to my son asleep down the hall, is spelled out in an alphabet of just four: A, T, C, and G. And now, in a lab, scientists have doubled it, adding four synthetic letters that pair up and behave like the real ones.
It sounds like something from a movie. It isn’t. It’s a slow, careful expansion of a code we didn’t even know was there for most of human history. And that last part is what stuck with me, because the person who first worked out how traits get handed down from parent to child never knew a single one of those letters existed.
A monk, a garden, and a lot of counting
His name was Gregor Mendel, and in the 1850s and 60s he grew pea plants in a monastery garden in what is now the Czech Republic. He wasn’t trying to found a science. He was counting. Tall plants and short ones. Green peas and yellow. Wrinkled seeds and smooth. He crossed one kind with another, thousands of plants across years, and wrote down what happened, generation after generation.
He had no microscope that could show him a gene. He didn’t even have the word. He worked entirely from patterns, from ratios, from the patient boredom of counting the same thing over and over until a rule quietly showed itself. And one did. Traits pass down in predictable ways, some hidden, some out in the open. He had described the basic machinery of heredity almost a hundred years before anyone confirmed that DNA was the thing doing the work.
Understanding something you can’t see
This is the part I keep turning over. Mendel figured out the rules of a system without ever seeing its pieces. He read the alphabet, in a way, without ever seeing the letters. All he had was what the plants did, season after season, and enough patience to trust the pattern before he could prove the cause.
I think there is something in that for kids, though I would never hand it to my son as a lesson. He is eight, he gets tired after school, and a monk counting peas is not an obvious sell. But the idea that you can understand something by watching it closely, long before you can take it apart, feels like a gentler doorway into science than the glowing-lab version. It starts with noticing. Anyone can start there.
The part that quietly unsettles me
Here is what the tidy version leaves out. Mendel’s work sat mostly ignored for decades. His paper gathered dust. He died in 1884 without anyone realizing what he had found, and it took other scientists rediscovering his notes, long after, to see that a monk with pea plants had gotten there first.
I don’t love that ending, honestly. He did the work, got it right, and never saw it matter. It lands a little too close to a fear I carry as a parent: that so much of what I am planting in my son now, the reading, the patience, the small daily things, I won’t get to see the results of for years, if ever. You plant anyway. You count your peas and trust the pattern. Some nights that is the only kind of courage I actually understand.
