Can the Universe Really Expand Faster Than Light? A Kid-Friendly Answer

My son asked me the other day if a rocket could ever go faster than light. I said no, nothing can. Then, a few days later, I read a science headline that made me second-guess my own answer: the universe itself is expanding faster than light. So which is it?

Turns out both things are true, and the difference is a good one to sit with for a minute, because it is the kind of question that rewards patience instead of a quick answer.

How can anything move faster than light?

Nothing with mass can travel through space faster than light. That part of my answer to my son was correct. But the universe expanding is not an object moving through space. It is space itself stretching, everywhere, all at once. Galaxies that are far enough apart are not racing away from each other like cars on a highway. The distance between them is simply growing, the way dots on a balloon spread apart as you blow it up. Nobody is breaking the speed limit, because nobody is really “moving” in the usual sense.

It is a strange, almost ticklish idea. Space can grow faster than light can cross it. I still don’t fully feel it in my gut, if I’m honest, even though I understand the words.

A Ukrainian scientist who helped explain it

This kind of thinking, big, patient, willing to sit with strangeness, is exactly what the physicist George Gamow was known for. He was born in Odesa, Ukraine, and became one of the scientists who helped build our modern picture of an expanding universe, including early work connected to what we now call the Big Bang theory. He was a Ukrainian scientist who spent his life asking questions most people never think to ask, and finding ways to explain them so ordinary people could follow along too.

I don’t tell my son this to impress him with a big name. I tell him because it helps to know that someone from an ordinary place, doing ordinary work day after day, ended up shaping how we understand the whole universe. It takes the mystery out of “genius” a little, and puts curiosity back in.

What I actually do with this at home

I don’t try to explain the physics perfectly, because honestly I can’t. What I do is let the question stay open. When my son asks something I don’t fully understand, I say so, and then we look it up together or just let it sit unanswered for a while. I used to think I had to have a tidy answer for everything. I don’t anymore, and the questions seem to come more often now that I’ve stopped pretending to know it all.

We also read a little most nights, ten minutes or so, nothing formal. Some of it is science, some of it is just stories. I’ve noticed that kids who get used to sitting with a question in a book seem more willing to sit with a strange one out loud too. I can’t prove that’s why it works. It’s just what I’ve noticed.

He is not framed as a legend untouchable and far away. Just a person who grew up asking questions, in a place not so different from anywhere else, and kept asking them.

I still don’t have a perfect answer for my son about the speed of light and the edges of the universe. I’m not sure anyone fully does. But I’d rather raise a kid who’s comfortable not knowing yet than one who stops asking because the answer is too big.
